Eszter's Throne

1966, 3rd day, July 4th, Monday
Before dinner, we presented Aunt Eszter with HER CHAIR

THE CHAIR
In the morning Dévi asked for two volunteers. Krapcsák and I put on gym shoes and long trousers and set off to chop some wood. First, we removed the bark from the felled trees. Then Dévi told us that he wanted to make a judge’s chair for Aunt Eszter. It was still the middle of rest time when Dévi called us out to help him. Most of the wood had dried and was ready to be worked. We drilled some holes in the logs, then tried to put them together. Tiba lent us a hand, too. We nailed the pieces together to see how it would stand. It wasn’t terribly strong that way, so we added two cross-pieces. After the steps had been added, we all gave a sigh of relief, because that meant we were almost done. We worked without even stopping for our afternoon snack. The seat we made by splitting some of the pieces of wood. While the others were eating dinner, we covered it up. Aunt Eszter was really happy that at last, she could see all of her citizens at once.
